Walk in someone else’s shoes a VR initiative

May 19, 2020 by Anupama Dinesh A

Morton Heilig who today can be considered as a multimedia specialist, his vision towards a multi-sensory theatre is what leads to what we now have, Extended Reality. It started off with a Science Fiction, Heilig, a pioneer in VR and a filmmaker wanted his users to effectively feel and draw their attention to onscreen. Hence ended up building a prototype of his vision that gave the spectators a complete sensation of reality through sound, scents, and air breezes. And now both AR and VR have evolved the meaning of visual communication helping us create our own reality using phones, glasses, helmets, etc.

The application of Extended Reality is widespread. One that comes to our mind when we think about VR and its headgear is in playing games, but the extension of VR in daily life is much bigger.

What is XR, VR, AR, MR ?

Extended reality (XR): Extended reality refers to the virtual environment created by the computer graphics it is inclusive of all the Virtual Worlds known to mankind which are- VR(Virtual reality), AR(Augmented Reality), MR(Mixed Reality) and the ones that are yet to be discovered.

Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality: Let’s put them together so that the definition can be conveyed in an easy way. When Virtual Reality takes you to a virtual environment, the augmented reality creates a virtual environment from the place you stand!

Mixed Reality: It combines both the Virtual (from VR) and Real (from AR) environment producing a new world

VR for Good, Can VR create Empathy

Empathy enables a human to learn from other’s pain, which most of the people in this generation has lost. The proverb to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes means before making a judgemental about someone, you must understand their experiences, challenges, thought processes. it also helps in making a clearer decision to the question. VR now gives this ability through perceptual illusion – ‘Body Ownership illusion” As the name goes it has the meaning where an illusion is created where you become another person completely or partially.
